Women's Running Roundup 11/6/18

ROAD RUNNING

Comrades Marathon

While Steve Way may rightly be getting huge coverage for his 3rd place at Comrades, this is one of those moments when the ladies might sneak under the radar unless we shout about it. Carla Molinaro, who was highlighted in last week's WRR preview only went and came 9th. Now, that’s amazing in its own right but, as you will remember (pay attention at the back), she was running from Cape Town to the start of Comrades. 810km in days 1-19 (503 miles ) followed by 90.184km in 6:50:31. Thats 7'19/mile or 4'33/k for nearly 7 hours, which equates to 3:12 marathon pace - crazy.  Clapham Chasers' Carla has quite the history, having worked as a sports masseuse for a national team, served in the army in Afghanistan and has a nifty marathon PB of 2:51:46.

Outside of the GB results, SA didn’t dominate quite as much as previous years but still made a good showing with 5 in the top 10. Aleks(x)andra Morozova of Russia was the top non-SA athlete, coming 3rd in 6:20:21 with Sweden, USA and GB also represents in the top 10.

Our other GB previewed runners were:
Claire Briggs (GB) of Bad Boy Running, who came second of the GB ladies in a brilliant 7:50:24 and 39th place.
Suzy Calitz-Patel of the 100 Marathon club who finished in 10:48:53

And our previewed ‘Elite’ runners:
Gerda Steyn - 2nd in 6:15:34
Lizzy Ramadimetja Babili (Team Massmart) - 132nd in 8:44:32
Ann Ashworth (Team Massmart) - 1st in 6:10:04
Devon Yanko - 7th in 6:47:44

You can see the full list of GB women’s results below but overall we got:

1 x GOLD (top 10) -  Carla Molinaro
No Wally Hayward: 10th to sub 6hrs
No Silver medals: 6hrs 00min 01sec to sub 7hrs 30min
5 x Bill Rowan medals (bronze-centred circled by silver ring): 7hrs 30min to sub 9hrs 00min.
29 x Bronze medals: 9hrs 00min to sub 11hrs 00min.
19x Vic Clapham medals (copper): 11hrs 00min to sub 12hrs 00min.

Yeovil Marathon

Straight off the back of her 2nd place at the UK Boston Marathon (2:56:49) two months ago and  1st place at Retford Half (1:24:08) in March, Julie Warner (V50) of Shelton Striders is in storming form and won the Yeovil marathon in a new PR of 2:55:16. Julie only started running in 2004 and has previously represented GB as an age grouper in the triathlon. However, she had to start again from scratch after a life changing bicycle accident a few years ago. It seems that she’s really finding her form again now. What a woman! Her previous best was 2:55:38 set at the Robin Hood Marathon in 2017.

TRAIL RUNNING

Cajsa brings you all the news from the trails:

Screen Shot 2018-06-04 at 16.48.24.png

It was a big weekend for big off road mileage here in Blighty.

Let's start down south where the Saxon trails of the South Downs got a real dusting off courtesy of the 300 centurions out chasing that elusive 100 mile belt buckle;

SOUTH DOWNS WAY 100 (100 miles, 5000 m)

Screen Shot 2018-06-12 at 15.42.05.png

With two of the favourites DNS-ing (Mari Mauland who I'm guessing chose to rest in order to prepare for WS100 in two weeks time and Sarah Sawyer who was out on course but pacing rather than racing) last years second lady Sarah Cameron took an early lead and brought the 2018 trophy home with a finishing time of 18 hours and 14 minutes. Half an hour behind was Laura Swanton following up her second place at Thames Path 100 with another Centurion 100 mile podium.

Rachel Bennett held the bronze position for the first half of the race but in the later stages Rebecca Lane found that extra endurance gear and rounded up the top 3 by crossing the finish line in 20:06.

Big trail-homie shout outs to the sheros Melanie McKay and Emma Hancock who both made their 100 mile debuts on the gnarly hills of SDW and finished in the respectable times of 25:27 and 28:46. <3

1. Sarah Cameron 18:14
2. Laura Swanton 18:45
3. Rebecca Lane 20:06
4. Rachel Fawcett 21:00
5. Rachel Bennett 21:37

CTS CLASSIC QUARTER (45 miles, 1800 m)

By sticking to the coast but heading way out west and dividing the race distance by 4 we get another competitive race result to devour.

The annual June instalment of Endurance Life's Trail Series stretches over 44 rugged coast path miles from Englands southernmost point; The Lizard, to the most western point at Lands End. This year the hot and humid weather over the exposed Cornwall coast seems to have taken its toll on the runners. 2017 runner up at Lakeland 100; Wendy Chapman came in as first woman and 5th OA in 8:09, a finishing time over an hour slower than the course record set by this years second lady Zelah Morrall in 2016. On third place we find another returning Classic Quarter champion (2015), Clare Prosser in 9:00.

1. Wendy Chapman 8:09
2. Zelah Morrall 8:21
3. Clare Prosser 9:00

RACE TO THE TOWER (50 miles, 2000 m)

We're finishing up the UK ultra weekend in style with an overall female champion!

Mary Menon claimed the first ever female victory in a Threshold Trail Series event by being the first runner to finish the 50 mile race of up and downs to Broadway Tower in an impressive 8:46. I have a feeling Gill might have more info on her since my research found her noted as 10th fastest woman in this years London Marathon results.

GB: Indeed, Mary runs for Illfracombe AC and  was 10th woman in 2:51:20 and has a PB of 18s quicker, set in London the previous year as well as a half marathon best of 1:21:37 from March this year. The woman is fast! Mary, we salute you.

Runner up was Amy White finishing in 9:34, twenty minutes ahead of Helen Mussen in 9.56.

In other European Isle based badass-ery news last years Transgrancanaria winner Azara Garcia dominated the womens race at Tenerife Bluetrail and came in on 4th position overall. She finished the gruelling 102 km 'sea to summit to sea' -race across the island (including a climb of Mt Teide) in 14:21. (The full results have not been published yet.)

TRAIL PREVIEW

Next week the european trail gals can (unless they're signed up for the Mozart 100) let their legs recover ahead of Lavaredo Ultra Trail later in the month. The American top birds on the other hand will be out fighting in force for titles in the first race of the USA skyrunner series. This years start list for the Broken Arrow 52 k is stacked with big names, Amelia Boone, Rory Bosio & Megan Kimmel are a few to look out for, also back in the game after her terrifying fall at last years Tromsoe Skyrace is Hillary Allen. I'm looking forward to reporting my tracking duties from this one!

Until then, you will find me at the end of the road, cursing at nettles, specifically this weekend at the long course of the first of 2018's Maverick's X races over in Exmoor!

ROAD PREVIEW

Er, so this is a bit rubbish this week as I've contacted the organisers to ask for start lists but I'm waiting on replies. Let me know what races you want covered.

23rd Dartford Midnight Marathon
